Third time’s a charm

The green cardigan, formerly known as the green top, and now turning out to be a green sweater is still sitting here, not progressing at all. Row after row I knit and night after night someone seems to unravel all achievement. That, of course, is not true but it feels like it.

A while ago, I had actually finished the cardigan. I had even sewn on buttons. Every now and then I would wear it, knowing that it wasn’t perfect.

Well, it wasn’t all that bad, the back was actually nice, but the front, the fitting, the size – no. Hence, lately I decided to start over. The man and the boy had to help me unravel because I thought that might speed up the whole process (… dream on, knitter …). The boy had to actually frog, while the man and I were to wind the two strands. So far for theory.

However, theory and practice turned out to be not congruent. Within no time the yarn was all tangled up (no surprise) as the son had been pulling too fast and the man had been too slow winding (no surprise either – after all, they did not help me voluntarily). Hence, I was annoyed at first, then angry. Really angry. That was when we had just about reached armpit level.

And because shoulders and neckline weren’t that bad after all, I left the upper part as it was (better for family peace anyway) and started knitting in rounds. Now the former cardigan, that once was a top, will become a v-neck sweater.

Will things work out? I don’t know. However, I am confident after first try-ons. The yarn, structure and color still inspire me and isn’t there a saying “third time’s a charm”?

Sign of life

The stairs in front of our house need to go, because the wall behind them is wet. A very simple sentence. A causal clause, if I remember right (it has been a while since I learned that at school).

However, realization is not as simple as the sentence makes it look like, but rather complicated. Because those stairs – sandwiched between the house and the garage – have a substructure of stone and concrete up to at least 2 feet below the earth’s surface. Solid concrete. To quote one of the workers: “Tanks can go over there.”

That may come in handy for some – not for us. The stairs have to go.

Hence, we’re no longer talking about 12 days of construction work, but (a long guess) probably 20, costs are twice as high as projected, we need a second container for construction waste, the basketball is at the neighbor’s and since Thursday the jackhammer has been in constant use.

The whole house is trembling and so am I.

Ultimately, Saturday morning the glass shower partition gave in. Bits of broken glass everywhere. It had been too much.

I might add that the front door we ordered January 11 was finally delivered last week (after 5 months and countless visits at the store) but turned out to be 2 inches too short and 4 inches too narrow (due to their mistake in measuring), so now we’ll have to wait another six weeks. But why would I care?

Afer all, the old stairs are not yet gone and the craftsman who should build the new stairs has bailed out because of a herniated disc. Hence, we might be without stairs for a while. Therefore, access to the house is only possible on a rack in the driveway, then through the garage (gate on one side, door on the other), through the garden and across the porch. All of this s*cks! Pfft … no problem.

There hasn’t been much knitting lately, rather frogging. And I don’t feel like blogging. Especially since the new blog and I and GDPR are still having some sort of stranger anxiety … (I might write about that at some point).

Be it as it may, at some point everything will be okay. Eventually.

Take this as a sign of life

We’re moving

I have already mentioned it in one of my latest blogposts: the time has come,

häkelmonster will move today!

Away from a wordpress hosted system to my own. As a result, some things will change, lots of them for the better, and a few things will disappear.

häkelmonster movingFrom now on, there will be just one blog (instead of two), where you can decide whether to read what I wrote in German or English. However, at the same time, I will lose likes and followers; eventually, the design might be slightly different but all texts, fonts and specifications will be exactly as required by the GDPR (well, isn’t this something).

Please look out for me, follow me again, be lenient in whirlwind days and always remember (to quote Hermann Hesse): In the core of every beginning lives magic …

Keep the faith

Review: Pica Pau

The little goddaughter (4) has long had a little sister (3) and now there is a baby sister (3 months) too. Joy and good cheer with friends and family and of course the minute I knew she was there, I started looking for wool in pastel colors and the most beautiful baby patterns. However, I did not knit a single stitch …

PicaPau HäkelmonsterBecause – as if it had been agreed – EMF publishing house sent me the book Animal Friends of Pica Pau. The first thing I thought when looking at the book was that it has been way too long since I had a crochet hook in my hand. Followed by the thought that this little baby might never be able to wear everything I have already knit for her siblings (let alone anything I might knit for her), because to do so her mom would have to change her several times the day.

PicaPau HäkelmonsterHence, I decided on making her a stuffed animal. The son voted for Edgar Unicorn (no surprise), I am tempted to try Adele Alpaca (no surprise either). (The German version of the book has names for every character. The energetic otter is Oswald Otter, the gentle rhino is Rhino Rocco, and so on. However, I assume that all instructions are alike in the different language editions of the book.) So far, I have not decided which one to crochet, as we’re still reading the book. And there is a lot to be read.

PicaPau HäkelmonsterEach character comes with a story. There is Fred Ferkel (i.e. Piglet), who is afraid of the dark and afraid to be left alone, Oswald Otter, who was born at the Irish West coast. Pia Panda is a gourmet. Then there is Norbert Nasenbär (i.e. coati), a ranger and soccer fan, Vektor Wolf, who may be a hipster, Piet Papageientaucher (i.e. puffin), a specialist when it comes to sailing yachts, and 15 others.

It’s fun to read those stories and somehow every little creature becomes familiar, even before crocheting the foundation chains. Just as nice: All patterns have detailed instructions, step-by-step pictures and explanations of all techniques used, so everyone should easily get acquainted with any of the animals. Especially since the book has a good 50-page introduction on crochet basics (hook, yarns, equipment, how to hold the hook, how to read instructions …), but also stitches and techniques are wonderfully explained.

PicaPau HäkelmonsterNo pig in a poke, no nasty surprises, no boring book. Quite the opposite. Whether you’re working on legs or sweaters, horns or ears – every single detail can be looked up.

So, what’s holding me back? Nothing, other than the agony of choice … (1) to choose a color and (2) to decide on a creature.

Unicorn or alpaca? Edgar or Adele.

Or Gina.

Test knit: Wavelength

In case you missed it – among lots of other stuff, Sophia writes beautiful sock pattern. Newest addition to that “sock family” is Wavelength and I was lucky enough to test knit. No idea whether name or pattern came first, all I know is that increases and decreases indeed remind me of relaxing ocean waves rolling in.

Wavelength Stichfest HäkelmonsterMaybe I should not have chosen variegated yarn, as now those waves are not as obvious as they might have been when knitted with a solid color. However, variegated or not – they’re ocean colors.

Be it as it may, it’s a lovely pattern. Easy to follow, nothing complicated, great fit. And even though I did not like Sophia’s idea of binding off – they’re neither constricting nor too loose. Hence, a bit of extra work but totally worth it.

I’m perfectly happy with those socks. Looks like Sophia and I are (again) on the same wavelength …

So, if you are among those who like to knit socks in summer, have a look at the pattern over at ravelry and knit an ocean for your feet.
